Cast Iron Trench Grates

Here we are again. Writing another blog post all you guys have been waiting for. What are we gonna intro on today? That’s right, Cast Iron Trench Grates, oh what? Yes, Cast Iron Trench Grates.

Cast Iron Trench Grates are the go to, gold standard, for all if not every monolithic trench drain job.  Even the HDPE systems use cast iron in either gray iron or ductile iron form in about 50-70% of medium to heavy duty applications.  Our friend, the cast iron trench grate, has a lot of advantages with few very few drawbacks.  For one, when coated properly or left unpainted, oxidation wont diminish its integrity. Two, the slot styles can fulfill most design specifications, such as, ADA, parallel slots, horizontal slots, decorative slots, solid, bolted- you name it.  Besides a few different applications like, extremely high temperatures or  one’s with high chemical use (in this case it would be best to use 316 stainless and 304 stainless steel respectively) cast iron trench grates can fulfill a majority of jobs.

Neenah Foundry is our foundry of choice when it comes to Trench Grates.  They have a huge product portfolio, from 8” all the way up to 51” in 1.5” thickness and 2” thickness.  They can come bolted for added security or unbolted.  Matter of fact, one of our first projects, which was for the US Army Corps of Engineers, we used Neenah Foundry 12” bolted grates.  We have nothing against imports, but as an American Company we don’t mind paying a few extra bucks for getting a superior product that we can proudly stand behind, as all Neenah Foundry products are proudly made in America.

When implementing cast iron trench grates for your project, a few things to keep in mind.  Will you be needing frames? If you’re going for an on-site pour, the answer is yes.  If your purchasing pre cast channels, you have more leeway.  The frames have prefabricated anchors for fast and easy installation. Another consideration is, do the grates need to be ADA? If there is high expected pedestrian traffic, then the answer is most likely yes.
